“Outside of Mom's 1940 St. Vincent School of Nursing graduation picture, this the only one of her in uniform. Talk about white! Considering the nature of the occupation, what chore it must've been trying to keep them that way. It appears that Mom moved to Ames and started working for Iowa State College Hospital between June 25, 1942 (the date of her last letter from Sacred Heart Hospital/LeMars, Iowa to Dad) and Nov 30, 1942 (the date of an Ames, Iowa newspaper that reports her as a College Hospital patient). In Mom's letter from Sacred Heart she wrote she was serious about looking for work in Ames...and would he be home for the Fourth of July? (Dad was going to summer school.) Move to Ames...and be together. Made perfect sense to her. You ask, why letters? Letter writing was the thing...long distance phone calls were costly. Rubber for tires and gasoline were rationed. Along with the rest of the country, Mom and Dad "made do" with what they had. There was a war going on.”
