Anna Verene (Pick) Pottebaum
Born April 9, 1900. Died January 31, 1982.
The oldest Pick daughter and the only to wed instead of joining the convent, Anna, was a devoted wife and mother. She and her husband, Anton (A.J.) were parents to thirteen children, six girls and seven boys, and spent their lifetimes farming their land and serving the community of Alton, Iowa.
These two Pick family photos were taken in January of 1930 at the Pick farm. The occasion for the gathering was to see Sister Bertilda off to the convent. Anna had her three oldest children with her.
Highlights from the wedding article published in the Alton Democrat on January 4, 1945:
A very pretty double wedding took place at St. Mary’s Church Tuesday morning January 2nd when the two daughters of Mr. And Mrs. A.J. Pottebaum were wedded. The event was also the 21st anniversary of the marriage of the bride’s parents.
Solemn high mass was celebrated at 7:30 a.m. Rev. Henry Pick and Rev. Raymond Pick, uncles of the bride, acted as deacon and subdeacon.
The brides wore identical gowns of white satin, made entrain with lace insertions and sweetheart necklines. Their gifts from the bridegrooms were also identical, both being gold lockets.
Following the service at the church, a wedding breakfast was served for the bridal parties at the home of the bride’s parents by Miss Katherine Rolfes, the great aunt of the brides. At noon a wedding dinner was served to 150 guests at Alton town hall.
A large number of friends enjoyed a wedding dance given by the bridal couples in the evening at the Alton opera house.
Three of the popular young people are well known here, the brides and Milo Probst having attended St. Mary’s Academy, while Herbert Schueller attended a rural school near Primghar.
